Asbestos
Asbestos Containing Waste (ACM) contains 1% or more asbestos, as determined by a testing method called Polarized Light Microscopy. When dry, ACM is considered friable if it can be crumbled, pulverized, or reduced to powder by hand pressure. Friable asbestos containing waste must be handled as a hazardous waste as required in the California Health and Safety Code and Title 22 of the California Code of Regulations. It is possible for non-friable ACM to become friable when subjected to unusual conditions, such as demolishing a building or removing an ACM that has been glued into place.
Non-friable ACM is divided into two categories:
* Category I - Asbestos-containing resilient floor coverings (like vinyl asbestos tile), asphalt roofing products, packings, and gaskets. These materials rarely become friable because the asbestos is locked securely into the material.
* Category II - All other non-friable ACMs. These are more likely to become friable because they are not as resistant to crushing or pulverizing.
Asbestos Disposal
* All burnt structures require certification, regardless the age.
* All pre-1984 demolished structure waste require certification to be accepted in any of our landfills and/or transfer stations.
* All post-1984 structures are assumed to be asbestos free and are therefore accepted without certification.
* Friable Asbestos is accepted only at the following locations:
* Antelope Valley Landfill, Los Angeles County (661) 947-7197
* Bishop Landfill, Inyo County (760) 873-5577
* Lassen Co/Bass Hill Landfill, Lassen County (530) 252-1273
* Ridgecrest – Inyo Kern Landfill, Kern County (805) 327-2111
* Azusa - Azusa Land Reclamation (626) 334-0719
Treated Wood Waste Disposal:
All hazardous treated wood waste managed in California will have to be stored and manifested as hazardous waste and transported to class I hazardous waste landfills for disposal. As of January 1, 2021 treated wood waste is no longer accepted at San Bernardino County Landfills and will only be accepted at the following locations in California:
* Buttonwillow Landfill · 2500 W Lokern Rd, Buttonwillow, CA 93206 · (661) 762-6200
