Little Aviator Café set to re-open April 1 after a year of uncertainty

Restaurant owners Tony and Pam Spagnuolo are preparing to re-open the Little Aviator Café at Apple Valley Airport on Thursday, April 1 after a bumpy year of openings and closures due to the coronavirus pandemic.

When the café was forced to close for the second time in July 2020 due to COVID-19 State mandates, Pam said they began to look into other ways to keep their business afloat by enrolling in the state’s Great Plates program, which provides meals to seniors and people who cannot leave their homes during the pandemic.

“We heard about the Great Plates program and we signed up for that and were lucky enough to be chosen for that. The is what carried us through and were able to pay our bills and rent and survive,” said Pam.

“My husband did the deliveries and really, really enjoyed interacting with the seniors. It was nice … and basically, they had someone checking in on them every day.”

Pam said they delivered free of charge to the seniors who reached out to them for help who couldn’t get on the program but still needed a meal. “We still delivered meals to them … the ones that we felt were in need,” said Pam.

The café intends to continue to participate in the program as long as it continues. With all six employees returning to work, Pam said she is excited to have them all back with a warm welcome by the community. “We had so many people checking in on us, asking if we were doing OK, are you going to be able to re-open and now, they are just ecstatic that they found out we are re-opening.”

Key to surviving thus far, Pam said they consider themselves to be very blessed and fortunate to be a part of the Great Plates program. “We had to go with the blows.”

The café will re-open for normal business hours daily from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. With warmer weather ahead, the patio will be open along with the picnic tables, the covered area and limited capacity seating (25 percent in the red tier) in the dining room.

Their menu includes American comfort food breakfast and lunch items. Their house specialties are their cinnamon roll French toast, Spanish omelet and the lunch menu specialty includes hand-crafted angus burgers. “We have the best hand-crafted cheeseburgers in the desert,” said Pam.

Gluten-free, vegan and keto-friendly options are also available. The café is located at Apple Valley Airport. They can be reached at 760.946.0044 or follow them on Facebook @littleaviatorcafe.
