On Sunday, May 4, 2014 at 10:38 p.m. Yucaipa City and County Deputies responded to the report of several shots being fired in the parking lot of Redlands East Valley High School. Upon arrival, deputies found between 100-200 students on the campus. Senior students were having an overnight campout in the quad area of the campus as part of school prank. While in the quad area, several unknown/non-students arrived at the location and attempted to enter the quad. Several students made contact with the unknown subjects, told them to leave and a verbal confrontation ensued. The unknown subjects returned to their vehicle and as they were leaving, one of them produced an unknown type handgun and fired three shots into the air. The suspects then fled the area in an unknown model dark grey or black Lexus sedan. Multiple students at the school immediately called law enforcement from their cell phones to report the gun shots. Yucaipa Deputies were assisted by officers from the Redlands Police Department, Sheriff's aviation and Deputies from Highland Station. The school was immediately locked down then swept and secured by officers for safety. All students were accounted for and confirmed uninjured. Deputies searched and secured the outer property of the school as well as areas surrounding it for suspects, however none were found. After approximately 1 1/2 hours, students were released to go home to their families.
The investigation into this incident is ongoing. Anyone with information related to this investigation is asked to contact the Yucaipa Sheriff's Station.
