On Tuesday, March 25, 2014, Yucaipa City Deputies responded to the report of a solo vehicle collision at the intersection of Dunlap Blvd/Ave E. Upon arrival, deputies located the driver (Cameron Cox) being treated by members of Cal-Fire, who were already on scene. At the time, Cox appeared to have sustained traumatic injury to his upper torso. He was treated at the scene and then transported to Loma Linda University Medical Center where he was admitted in critical condition. Sheriff’s Region I MAIT investigators responded to conduct the collision investigation.
At the time of the collision, Cox was the sole occupant/driver of his 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee. Although the investigation is still preliminary, it appears that Cox was driving his vehicle at an unknown speed, W/B on Ave E, approaching the intersection at Dunlap Ave. At the intersection, he made a slight left turn to continue on Dunlap Ave. but turned too wide and onto the west shoulder of the roadway. As he continued on the shoulder, he collided and severed a guy wire attached to an SCE power pole and then continued into a chain-link fence next to the roadway. The collision with the fence caused damage to approximately 60’ of fencing and the top rail of the fence to break away. Upon separation of the rail, it was impaled trough the front of the Jeep and into the driver’s compartment where it injured Cox.
The exact cause of this collision is still under investigation. Anyone who witnessed this collision or may have information related to this investigation is being asked to contact the Yucaipa Sheriff’s Station.
