On March 6, 2014 at about 8:30
a.m., deputies from the Hesperia Police Department and rescue personnel from the San
Bernardino County Fire Department responded to a vehicle vs. pedestrian traffic
collision on Peach Avenue and Sycamore Street in Hesperia. Upon arrival deputies
found a female juvenile pedestrian and a 2002 Chevrolet Impala had been
involved in the collision which occurred in the northbound lanes of Peach Avenue
at the intersection of Sycamore Street. Investigators determined that the Impala,
which was being driven by an adult female Hesperia resident, was traveling
northbound on Peach Avenue as a 7 year old female juvenile was attempting to
cross Peach Avenue. The driver of the Impala was unable to avoid the juvenile, she was struck in the northbound lane of traffic.
The victim went down in the roadway as the driver of the Impala came to
a stop. The juvenile victim suffered major injuries and was airlifted to Loma
Linda Medical Center where she later died
from her injuries. The female driver of the Impala did not receive any injuries
during the collision.
Deputies from the Hesperia
Station's Major Accident Investigation Team (MAIT) are conducting the
investigation and the name of the patries involved is being withheld at this time. MAIT
investigators believe the juvenile was on her way to her school bus
stop at the time of the collision, and several other juveniles who were
in the area and may have witnessed the collision. MAIT investigators are working with School
Police officials to locate any student witnesses who may have been in the area
at the time.
The investigation is ongoing, Peach Avenue was closed in both directions
between Sycamore and Alder while MAIT investigators conducted their investigation. At this time, alcohol and speed of the vehicle do not appear to be a factor.
Anyone with information or
anyone who may have witnessed the collision is asked to contact Deputy Kevin
McCurdy from the Hesperia Station.
