Summary

On Monday March 3, 2014, at approximately 6:07 pm, Deputies of the Apple Valley Police Station were dispatched to a report of a strong chemical smell coming from the bathroom at Walmart on Hwy 18, in Apple Valley.  Apple Valley Fire District personnel also responded.  The chemical was found to be pepper spray that had been deployed in the restroom.  Shortly after responding to Walmart, employees of McDonalds and Jack in the Box called in to report similar circumstances in their restrooms.  Another call followed shortly by Banner Mattress where an $1100. mattress had been sprayed with pepper spray.

Walmart was able to remove the chemical from the bathroom without evacuating their store.  McDonalds and Jack in the Box had to close the inside restaurant for the night and one employee of Jack in the Box went home feeling ill from the smell of the pepper spray.

Through investigation, the suspect was identified as Richard Pelletier of Apple Valley. Pelletier was located at his home and arrested without incident.  Pelletier was booked at High Desert Detention Center on charges of PC 594-felony vandalism.
