Press Release

DATE/TIME: Saturday, May 31, 2014

INCIDENT: Mojave Riverbed Clean-up

LOCATION: Mojave riverbed - Victorville

Summary

The San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department Homeless Outreach Proactive Enforcement (H.O.P.E.) Team collaborated with the City of Victorville and a local non-profit organization to remove trash from the Mojave River in a stretch where several homeless encampments are located.  Members of the San Bernardino County Fire inmate crew, work release inmates, and community volunteers filled seven full-size roll-off dumpsters to capacity with trash from the riverbed.  Many homeless residents also assisted by pre-filling and staging over 400 large trash bags in anticipation of the cleanup effort.

The Sheriff's Department encourages those wishing to help the homeless to do so through the Victor Valley Rescue Mission or other legitimate service provider.  The public is encouraged to NOT deliver material goods into the river bed.  Years of such material deliveries has contributed to the accumulation of many tons of trash.
