On June 22, 2014, at 2:38 hours, deputies from the Barstow Sheriff's Station responded to a residence to conduct a welfare check in the 35600 block Riverview Lane in Hinkley, California.  Upon arrival, deputies located Jose Salazar on the balcony of the residence, armed with knives and a baseball bat which he was swinging.  He had fresh cuts on his hands and made verbal threats to hurt himself or  anyone who came near him.  Deputies gave verbal commands to put the weapons down and step inside to talk.  Salazar climbed to the roof still armed with weapons.  One of the deputies was standing below Salazar and attempted to defuse the situation by talking to him.  Salazar swung the bat at the deputy's head on three separate occasions and ignored the commands to put the weapons down.

Deputies deployed their tazers however,  Salazar was able to pull the darts out.  Deputies also utilized the less than lethal bean bag rounds and Oleoresin Capsicum (OC), both proved to have little to no affect on the suspect.  Salazar dropped the knives and baseball bat then picked up a 4x6 board.  Deputies offered him a bottle of water and when he reached for it, deputies were able to gain control and take him into custody.  Salazar was  transported to the West Valley Detention Center where he was booked for assault on a peace officer and cultivation of marijuana.

The San Bernardino County Narcotics Division responded to the location to investigate a large marijuana grow which was found inside the residence.  Investigators found a sophisticated hydroponic marijuana cultivation operation.  Investigators seized a total of 187 marijuana plants, in various stages of growth, approximately two pounds of processed marijuana and an advanced hydroponic growing set up. Investigators found that the suspect had bypassed the electrical system and had also stolen utilities during the past year.
