Incident:        Couple arrested for willful cruelty and torture of a child.

Suspect(s):       Jamie Lyn Updegraff, 29-year-old resident of Hesperia

                          Jake Robert Updegraff, 31-year-old resident of Hesperia

On Tuesday, July 15, 2014, the San Bernardino County Sheriff Department's Hesperia Station responded to a Children and Family Services emergency referral at Loma Linda University Children's Hospital where a four year old female was admitted for ingesting a toxic substance. The victim was found to have multiple non-accidental injuries, to include evidence that she had been tortured.


Detectives conducted an investigation and arrested the victim's mother and step-father, Jamie Updegraff, age 29, and Jake Updegraff, age 31, both residents of Hesperia. Both have been booked at Central Detention Center for willful cruelty to a child, failure to provide care to a child, torture, and causing great bodily injury during the commission of a felony.


The child remains hospitalized at Loma Linda University Children’s Hospital.
