INCIDENT:     Kidnapping


LOCATION: Valero Gas Station, Joshua Tree 


 

VICTIM:    Kayla Smith, 22 year old female

 

SUSPECT:    Galo Zurita, 35 year old male, Resident of Bellflower


Summary

On Wednesday, August 6, 2014 at 4:32 p.m. suspect Galo Zurita, located victim Kayla Smith, who is his ex-girlfriend, at the Valero gas station in Joshua Tree. The suspect contacted the victim and forced her into his vehicle. The suspect then drove the victim several miles west of the location on Highway 62. The victim managed to get free from the suspect and another motorist took her to safety. The suspect fled the area and was not able to be located that night. The victim was unharmed. 

On Thursday, August 7, 2014, detectives from the Morongo Basin Station received information regarding a location the suspect might be in the City of Bellflower. Detectives responded to Bellflower along with personnel from the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Specialized Enforcement Division. The suspect’s vehicle was located at an apartment complex in the 16000 block of Eucalyptus Avenue. A short time later the suspect was observed walking out of the apartment complex and taken into custody without incident. The suspect was booked for PC 207-Kidnapping at the West Valley Detention Center in Rancho Cucamonga where he is being held in lieu of $250,000 bail.
