On Saturday, August 16, 2014 at 10:28 p.m., deputies from the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department, Highland Station, responded to a reported traffic collision at the intersection of Tippecanoe Avenue and 9th St.
Investigation showed that the suspect was driving north on Tippecanoe Ave approaching 9th St. The suspect was driving at speeds greater than were safe for roadway and traffic conditions. Just south of the intersection of 9th St., the suspect struck the rear end of a vehicle attempting to turn east onto 9th St. This vehicle spun out of control and struck a bicyclist who was travelling north along the east shoulder of Tippecanoe.
The driver of the suspect vehicle, a hispanic male, approximately 20 years of age, approximately 5'6" and 250 pounds, fled on foot prior to deputies arriving. One passenger in the suspect vehicle, a 23 year old female, sustained moderate injuries and was transported to St. Bernardine's Hospital for treatment. The bicyclist, an approximately 30 year old male who has not yet been positively identified , sustained major injuries and was transported to Loma Linda University Medical Center for treatment. As of the time of this press release, he remains in critical condition in a medically induced coma.
Deputies have received information regarding a possible suspect. As of the time of this press release, the possible suspect's identity is not being released in the interest of the ongoing investigation.
