August 14, 2014 at about 8:47 p.m., Deputies from the Hesperia Station and
rescue personnel from the San Bernardino County Fire Department responded to a
reported vehicle vs. pedestrian traffic collision at the intersection of Main
St. and Third Ave. in Hesperia. Upon arrival it was determined that a vehicle
travelling westbound on Main St. was involved in a collision with a 10 year old
boy crossing Main St. on his bicycle. The juvenile received major injuries
during the collision and rescue personnel transported the boy to Desert Valley
Hospital for further treatment. Despite medical staff efforts, the juvenile
died from his injuries at the hospital.
Station's Major Accident Investigation Team (MAIT) Investigators responded and
were able to determine through evidence, and numerous witnesses, that the
juvenile victim was riding his bicycle eastbound on the north sidewalk area of
Main when suddenly he attempted to cross Main St. against a red traffic signal.
A westbound 2014 Kia SUV, being driven by an adult male Hesperia resident, was
just approaching the intersection on a green traffic signal and stuck the
victim as he rode in front of the Kia.
Investigators believe there had been a stray dog in the area that may
have also entered the intersection and that the boy’s attention was focused on
that dog when he began to cross.
Investigators are continuing the investigation into the collision and the name
of the victim is pending positive identification and notification of family. Main
Street as well as Third Avenue was closed in both directions until about 2:00 a.m.
while MAIT investigators processed the scene for evidence. Speed and alcohol do
not appear to be a factor and the Kia driver was cooperative with
with information or anyone who may have witnessed the collision is asked to
contact the Hesperia Station, Deputy Simon DeMuri at (760)947-1500.
