Over the past few months, an unoffical gathering of cars had been occurring in the parking lot of Lowe's located near the intersection of Apple Valley Rd. and Bear Valley Rd. This gathering has been refered to as a "Cruise Night" and occurred on Wednesday nights. As the event has grown larger Sheriff's Dispatch has recieved multiple calls for service reporting racing, reckless driving, and other unlawful activity.
On Wednesday August 14, and Wednesday September 4, a joint operation was formed to address the issues. The operation consisted of Deputies from the Apple Valley Station, Victorville Station, Hesperia Station, and members of the San Bernardino County Auto Theft Task Force. After observing multiple crimes and unsafe driving occuring in the parking lot, deputies declared the gathering to be unlawful and gave lawful orders for the crowd to disperse. While they were leaving, over sixty vehicles were screened for vehicle code violations. Over the course of the two nights, eight arrests were made for various charges, (including reckless driving and outstanding arrests warrants) ten vehicles were impounded, thirty citations for vehicle code violations were issued, and a stolen engine and transmission were recovered.
The property owner no longer desires this type of activity to occur on the premisis and has authorized the Sheriff's Department to arrest anyone caught gathering in the area in this nature and to have them prosecuted for tresspassing and loitering.
