On December 31, 2013, while on patrol in Newberry Springs, Deputy Korkotsakis observed an older Ford Truck with expired registration and no front license plate. Deputy Korkotsakis activated his emergency lights and siren in efforts to conduct a traffic stop on the vehicle. The driver of the vehicle accelerated and refused to stop and attempted to evade law enforcement by driving through a busy gas station. Deputy Korkotsakis continued to pursue the truck.
The truck turned onto a dirt road continuing at a high rate of speed. The deputy discontinued the pursuit but continued to follow the truck at a safe speed on the dirt road. Approximately 0.6 miles later the truck became disabled and stopped. Both suspects immediately exited the vehicle and fled on foot. Deputy Korkotsakis was able to catch the driver but not the passenger. A perimeter was established by additional responding units. Shoe tracks were followed to an area of tumbleweeds where the passenger was located and arrested without incident.
During a vehicle search, deputies located two viales which contained a white powdery substance. The substance field tested positive for amphetamines.
The driver, Michael Fowlkes, was arrested for Felony Evading and Possession of Drugs. The passenger, Patrick Jones, was arrested for Resisting Arrest - both were transported and booked into the Barstow Jail.
