2. My house is well maintained, why did I get a compliance notice?

You may have received a notice because at the time of inspection your property showed signs of fire hazards (weeds/grass overgrown). However, it is possible that your property was cleaned after our inspection but a notice was still sent to you. In this case, we would like to thank you for maintaining your property. Please keep in mind that weeds/grasses need to be kept below 4 inches at all times.

3. Can someone show me where the fire hazards are on my property?

FHA sends out 60,000 notices per year, we are unable to come to your property; however, we will gladly respond to your e-mail or go over the notice with you via phone at (909) 884-4056 or e-mail  codeenforcement@lusd.sbcounty.gov


4. Are pictures of the violations taken?

Pictures are not taken during the initial inspection process. Pictures are taken prior to the issuance of Administrative Citations or abatement work performed on properties.

5. My home is going into foreclosure, why should I maintain it?

If any work is completed on the property by the County there will be a bill generated. Since the enforcement process began while you were the owner you may be responsible for abatement costs, fines and or penalties.


6. Will the County do my abatement work for me?

Yes, there is a $92.00 administrative fee plus the cost of the work. The work is approximately $150.00 per hour per 2 person crew. We do not provide estimates; however, the property owner should be able to calculate how big their property is and how long it would take 2 people with weed eaters to perform the work.


7. I need a letter stating that my property is in compliance.

8. Will I receive a phone call if you find a violation on my property during the second inspection?

No phone calls will be made once the second inspection has been conducted—100% abatement must be complete by the due date or an Administrative Citation may be issued.


9. I think you have an incorrect address for me, how do I change it?

The FHA Program uses the County Tax Assessor’s information to obtain property information which includes mailing address. Please verify your property information and if changes are needed please contact the

tax assessor’s office.


10. My fire insurance company wants me to abate fire hazards 200 feet from my house, but I don’t own the property. What should I do?

County Code only requires 100 feet of defensible space from structures. You are welcome to make arrangements with your neighbor for additional hazard abatement. Your local Fire Department may also be able to assist you.


11. Does the FHA Program have a list of contractors that do hazard abatement in my area?

The FHA Program does not provide endorsements or recommendations for contractors. Please contact your local Chamber of Commerce or Better Business Bureau for a list of contractors and landscapers that perform hazard abatement work in your area.


12. How will I know if my property has been “cleared”?

Upon your request, a Letter of Compliance can be mailed to inform you when the Inspector has cleared the property. See “I need a letter stating my property is in compliance” above.


13. How much time do I have to abate hazards after I receive a notice from FHA?

Fire hazard abatements must be completed within 30 days from the notification date on the Notice and Order to Abate. If no compliance is reached within the 30 days, a citation may be issued.


14. Can I get an extension of time to abate the fire hazards on my property?

An additional inspection will be required to verify that the majority of the fire hazard/threat has been mitigated.  This additional inspection is $92.00. If it is determined that an extension can be granted, there is also a $21.00 extension fee.  Combined the cost for the inspection and extension will be $113.00.
